Myofascial release is a specialized hands-on theraputic technique to improve the function of the joints, relieve pain and increase mobility. It includes:

•Resisted stretching to increase flexibility and balance opposing muscle groups

•Deep tissue massage to release trigger points

•Traction to relieve compression

•Stretches to promote realignment

For injuries, adhesions, joint immobiltiy and postural stress, myofascial release techniques can bring amazing relief. At the Natural Healing & Acupuncture Clinic we often treat musculo-skeletal pain with myofascial release in combination with acupuncture and exercises when appropriate.

Acupressure Massage

Using an understanding of the meridian system, acupoints are pressed and manipulated to release tension and promote the flow of qi (vital energy). This is a relaxing and invigorating massage to re-energize and normalize the body-mind.

This can be combined with Swedish massage (long stroking technique), essential oils or myofascial release depending on what the patient needs.

Cupping

Cupping is a practice in which a cup is applied to the skin and the pressure in the cup is reduced (by using change in heat or by suctioning out air), so that the skin and superficial muscle layer is drawn into and held in the cup.

Cupping is great for muscle tension and spasm in the large open areas of the back where it is easiest to place the cup. Another excellent use of cups is for lung problems, especially coughing, bronchitis and asthma. The suction powerfully helps break up phlegm and congestion.

Gua Sha

Gua in Chinese means “to rub” or friction. Sha is the term used to describe congestion of blood at the surface of the body. When friction is applied in repeated even strokes with a flat tool, the congested blood (sha) surfaces as small red bumps (petichiae) appear. In minutes the bumps fade into red patches. Gua ShaThe sha (congested blood) disappears totally in two to four days. The color and rate of fading are both diagnostic and prognostic indicators. There is no pain or lasting discoloration to the skin. The procedure is completely safe.

Gua Sha promotes circulation to the muscles and organs, and drains the lymphatic system. It helps to stimulate detoxification through the movement of fluids as nutrients are carried to the tissues and metabolic wastes are carried away.

Gua Sha can be used for pain and discomfort in the muscle layer and upper respiratory congestion. Gua Sha can also be used for stagnation in the digestive tract. One excellent use is to release the heat and toxicity in the radiation field for those undergoing cancer treatment and to reduce pain in shingles patients.
